Washington State - CEU opportunity

In the great state of WA we will be providing a great opportunity for CEUs in conjunction with a PGA tournament.  THAT'S RIGHT!   Get .7 CEUs (7 hours)  on Tuesday, August 19th and by Friday be attending the PGA tournament for free.      In the morning of the 19th will be education on various disabilities and ways to adapt golf for the many  abilities.  You will have rotations to learn to use the adaptive golf carts and adaptive golf gear.   In the afternoon you will work with people with varying disabilities and put in practice what you just learned.  It's a great day out on the Snoqualmie TPC where your $20,000 member fee is waived for the day!  If you don't get a chance to come be a therapist at this clinic, by all means at least tune in to the GOLF Channel on August 24th and see who wins the BOEING CLASSIC and if they have any footage of us from our Tuesday clinic.   Check it out:

This has been a great clinic since 2010 and has provided a great opportunity for a PGA tournament to have more focus on people with disabilities.  Since we began, the tournament has been made more aware of ways that they can make the tournament accessible and they have provided more space and accommodations.  Every year I see changes. It's been a fabulous side benefit to the clinic.

 

We have a limited amount of spaces left and they are  filling with PTs faster than RTs.  So I'm trying to hold a few spots for RTs.  

 

Of course, it is worth the flight to come out to WA in August.

CIMT training (30 hours of continuing educaiton credit).

Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) training, which in the past has only been open to PT and OT, is now available to Recreational Therapists! 

 

Temple University will host the very first 4-day CIMT training course for RTs this summer to be held on Thurs., Aug. 7th through Sun., Aug. 10th.  The training will cover both pediatric and adult CIMT training, with a heavier focus on adult stroke rehabilitation. There is no test following the training. It is purely an educational course. Following the course, participants receive a certificate of completion. The training will be provided by Dr. David Morris, a well-known CIMTpractitioner and trainer from the University of Alabama Birmingham (home of the CI Therapy Research Group). The training usually costs $900 (and is only available in Birmingham, Alabama), but we were able to substantially reduce the cost to $300 per person (and hold the first RT CIMT training course at Temple!). If you are interested in registering for the 4-day CIMTtraining course, please see the attached registration. The registration deadline is Friday, July 11th. THIRTY clock hours (3.0 CEUs) will be provided for the training.

Undergraduate online courses in TR

I received an email from a person a while back asking if there were any undergrad courses in TR. This person was short on a few courses in TR that she (or he) needed to sit for the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) exam.

I regret to say I can't remember who had asked me this question or sent me an email.

However, I did get info. in an ATRA List-Serv post today about online courses.

Here it is:

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) offers 2 totally online courses each semester. This fall we are offering
THERREC 203 Recreation as a Therapeutic Intervention
THERREC 308 TR in Phys Rehab/Behavioral Health
Courses are taught in a traditional 15 semester format with various assignments due each week to keep students engaged in the course.
Classes start T 9/6 but enrollment is a possibility through the week.
Interested individuals will need to act quickly to apply to the university, register for the course and then log into the course management system.

Pre-Approved CEUS for the Rec. Therapist

I have some good information for the CTRS, of course, you should have already received an email from NCTRC at this time about the NEW pre-approved CEU program!

ATRA also sent an email.

Here it is:

The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) and the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) are proud to announce the formation of a joint committee to establish a CEU Pre-approval Program. The purpose of the CEU Pre-approval Program is to improve services to CTRSs seeking to complete recertification requirements by assuring that potential ATRA CEU opportunities are approved by NCTRC prior to enrollment. It is envisioned that the CEU Pre-approval Program will result in an improved level of CEU related offerings and ultimately will expand the depth of critical knowledge gained via the NCTRC recertification process.

Representatives from both organizations have been working diligently during the past several months to complete a draft pre-approval process. A pilot project to test the newly developed process will commence with the 2011 ATRA Annual Conference to be held in Indianapolis, IN, September 18-21. CTRSs who attend the ATRA Annual Conference will be able to participate in educational sessions and earn continuing education hours that are pre-approved by NCTRC. It is anticipated that if the pre-approval process is successful during the initial pilot phase, then the program will be expanded to include other conferences and CEU related events.

Additional information about the CEU Pre-approval Program will be forthcoming from the joint committee on behalf of both organizations.
