Soc. Psy - Halo Effect - and Self-Care

My advisor in graduate school at Indiana University, David Austin, claims that those of us in Recreational Therapy are “applied social psychologists.” Austin claims that his advisor in graduate school had coined us, Recreational Therapists as that.

I enjoy studying social psychology.

There is one concept called, “The Halo Effect.”

Basically, “The Halo Effect” is a bias that “good-looking people” are more successful and intelligent.

The opposite can be true, too. People we perceive as “not as attractive” are perceived as less intelligent.

It could be a self-fulfilling prophecy. We treat people certain ways “as being smart” or “as being not as smart” and it produces the outcome.

Fox News posted an article today, based on study from University of Texas that argues that “attractive people have higher incomes.”

I read this right when I thought it was my attractive personality that was going to make me millions. (That sentence was a joke to add humor).

I work in mental health. I’ve noticed (based on my experiences and observations) that a person with depression starts taking better care of their physical appearance when they’re feeling better. They’ll start to bathe, brush teeth, comb hair.

I’m not sure, but, I’d think that doing these things (bathing, taking care of self, brushing teeth, getting hair styled, etc.) could be a chicken before the egg thing. Maybe doing these things first could cause a person to start feeling better.

Self-care interventions may be a good prerequisite for other social activity interventions for people with mental health needs such as depression. These are just some random thoughts.

Here is the link for the article. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2011/04/01/beautiful-people-happier-successful-plain-looking-counterparts/?test=faces
