Have you read Daniel Pink's book, Drive: the surprising
truth about what really motivates us?
Pink argues that:
Motivation I consisted of doing what is needed to live and
survive.
Motivation II consisted of using punishments (sticks) and rewards
(carrots) to motivate people to change.
Pink argues that current research shows that Motivation II is
great for obtaining short-term compliance, but poor at creating long-term
change.
Pink reviews the research that indicates that Motivation 3.0 is a
more effective way of producing long-term change.
