Join an innovative organization serving 900 individuals with developmental disabilities in the metro north area of Boston. As part of our Family Resource Center, the Recreation Department offers comprehensive services to those living at home with families, independently, in supported living and in group homes. The Director of Recreation oversees all phases of a community-based therapeutic recreation program for children and adults with developmental disabilities, including direct care responsibilities. This position is 40 hours including evening and weekend hours.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
            Program-Related Responsibilities:
1.                   Develop, oversee and evaluate a variety of year-round recreational and social programs, which will include the areas of sports, the arts, social/leisure, outings, travel, life skills, special events and family programs.
2.                   Develop recreation and life skills activities for people with intellectual disabilities of all ages living at home, independently, and in residential programs.
3.                   Develop and maintain relationships and collaborative programming with existing community resources such as: YMCAs, municipal recreation departments, school systems, athletic clubs, faith communities, etc.
4.                   Work cooperatively with families to identify need areas, locate resources and develop programs.
5.                   Responsible for all phases of grant writing, management and reporting along with financial oversight of all programs.
6.                   Responsible for community outreach to people with disabilities, their families, volunteers and other organizations.
7.                   Operate and organize activities in conjunction with Special Olympics, at the local, sectional and state level.
8.                   Compose newsletter information, brochures and special events flyers.
9.                   Responsible for public speaking engagements to help enhance the program in a variety of ways (financial, staffing, public education).
10.               Coordinate Therapeutic Recreation Assessments as requested by school systems and in partnership with Emarc Transition Services.
 
Administrative Responsibilities:
1.                   To screen, interview and hire staff for recreational activities.
2.                   To supervise all recreational staff including the Assistant Director and Therapeutic Recreation Specialist(s).
3.                   Develop a network of community resources and volunteers for recreational programs.
4.                   Attend required meetings.
5.                   Maintain participant, program and financial documents and records.
 
Additional duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license
Driving is required.
Must complete all agency required health and safety trainings.
Must be certified in CPR and first aid (training is available)
 
Supervisory responsibilities include all recreation staff and volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Qualifications require experience in developing and implementing recreation/leisure activities for persons with developmental disabilities. Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation Management required. Demonstrated supervisory experience of paid and volunteer staff. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position is full time, this is an exempt position. Hours vary with number of programs being offered. At least 20 hours per week for planning and coordinating events, plus direct supervision. Included in the 40 hours are evening and weekend hours for program oversight and direct support.
