Big things are happening at St. Francis! Our dynamic new
president has the university on solid financial footing and positioned for
growth over the next few years. The Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism
Management is one of several identified for investment by the university’s
strategic plan. We are set to move into a $3 million remodeled facility,
renovated to the department’s specifications, in summer 2014. The building is
located in downtown Joliet which is becoming a local hub of education, cultural
arts, and transportation.
Small class sizes, a student-centered philosophy, and a
culture of collegiality characterize the USF experience. The RSTM program
was founded in 1976 and continues a strong tradition of community and
professional involvement. The major is accredited by the Council on
Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions.
We offer four concentrations including, Community Recreation
and Park Resources, Sport Operations Management, Therapeutic Recreation, and
Tourism/Hospitality Management. Minor programs include Leadership Studies,
Youth Development, Sport Marketing and Sport Communications. The department
also operates the Challenge Center, a low ropes team building program serving
the university, community, and business. Our specialty is experiential
education utilizing local and regional resources to engage student learning.
St. Francis is located in Joliet, Illinois, a suburb of
Chicago, about 35 miles southwest of the city. The area offers excellent quality
of life including affordable housing, strong public education systems, rich
cultural diversity, world-class local park and recreation systems, major league
