I attended the American Therapeutic Recreation Association’s
mid-year conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee in March 2013.
Based on my experiences, I’ve always enjoyed the presenters
at the open general session for ATRA conferences. March is national brain
injury awareness month! ATRA obtained speakers in alignment with this month.
This year, Dr. Bruch Allen, DMin, and Laura Allen, MRE
presented on how several Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS’)
made a difference in when an unexpected event occurred.
People who suffer brain injury (as well as other injuries) must
learn ways to adjust.
My good friend, Donna Winfrey, a CTRS, who lives in Tennessee, attended this session with me. She surprised me by purchasing me an autographed copy of Brain Storm: A Journey of Faith Through Brain Injury. I plan to review this book at my blog soon to get a better understanding of brain injury.
Bruce Allen said that he had gone from being a “victim” to
being a “victor!”
Based on his Recreational Therapy treatment, he said that “90%
for me was to get me back out and letting me know I can do it again.”
Bruce Allen is back to a higher functioning level and
involved in his community. He said, “therapy for me [now] is on Tuesdays when I
hand out bread and treats to the homeless.”
