Join us for a discussion of the current state of CARTE Accreditation and the projected impact upon the field of TR. Discussion will center on accredited programs, how programs can make application and the advantages of CARTE accreditation for practitioners, educators and the field in general.
Session D3:Recertification: Continuing Professional Competence
Date:March 27

This session provides an in depth coverage of recertification standards and requirements. Continuing education, professional experience, and re-examination will be described in detail. Utilization of the 2007 NCTRC National Job Analysis Study in relation to recertification requirements will be discussed.

Session E1: Positive Outcomes in Physical Rehabilitation through TR: Research Benefits
Date: March 6 Time: 1:00 p.m.

This session will describe results from the SCIRehab Project and identify TR interventions for SCI inpatient rehabilitation that are associated most strongly with positive outcomes one year post injury.
Session E2: Making Air Travel Accessible
Date: Friday, March 22 Time: 1:00 p.m.

This session is aimed at teaching professionals how to educate their clients with disabilities and/or their caregivers on air travel. We will review current laws pertaining to accessibility in air travel as well as the responsibilities of the traveler to help make the experience as stress-free as possible. The session is based on a program currently used for consumers with spinal cord injuries which works in partnership with the airlines to educate the traveler on the entire process, from making your flight reservation to arriving at the airport, navigating security, and boarding the plane, to arriving at your destination. We will discuss the benefits of partnering with airlines and how to go about fostering that relationship.
Session E3: Using Video Games as a Means for Physical Activity
Date: April 3 Time: 1:00 p.m.

This session is aimed at teaching professionals how to educate their clients with disabilities on different video game systems that can be used as an intervention tool. The video game systems targeted during this session would be the: Eye Toy (PlayStation 2), Wii (Nintendo), and Kinect (X-Box 360). Participants will be able to see a variety of adapted pieces of equipment that can be used with these video game systems in order for them to be modified for optimal inclusion for individuals with disabilities. Participants will be encouraged to think of ways to adapt video games to see the benefits and challenges posed to their clientele. Participants will also be educated on ways to level the playing field between the able-bodied and disabled community. In conclusion, at the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to identify the physical, mental, and social benefits to using video games as a physical activity intervention tool, as well as see the positive outcomes that come with playing video games.
