Via the ATRA list-serv:
Dear ATRA Members:
My name is Michael Cottingham and I am a professor of Sport Administration at the University of Houston. I have substantial background in adaptive athletics/disability sport and have developed an active research line on the topic. In addition, I am heading the development of a college quad rugby program on the UH campus.
I am writing because I am now able to accept doctoral students, and I feel that those with a CTRS background may be ideal candidates. The PhD program officially offers a kinesiology degree with an emphasis on sport administration (adaptive sport). My line of research focuses on how athletes with disabilities are perceived by society and how they are promoted. If you have any students, former students, coworkers who have a passion for sports for people with disabilities and who would be good candidates for a PhD, I respectfully request you have them contact me.
Our PhD program is 4 years, and prospective students can come in with a Master’s or simply a Bachelor’s degree. Students will have opportunities to teach and will be mentored actively in research. They will be fully supported with GAships, student insurance, free tuition, and a stipend of around $1300 a month (9 month contracts). If a student already had CTRS status, I presume upon graduating from this program they would be able to acquire a tenure track position in sports management, recreation administration, therapeutic recreation, or kinesiology. I would like 1-2 students this year as well as next year. The deadline to apply will be mid-late March so they would need to start soon. They can contact me with any questions of additional information atmcotting@central.uh.edu or by phone at 713-743-9065.
Michael Cottingham Ph.D.
