Danny Pettry -- Hero?

I consider myself to be humble. However, I thought I’d share with my blog readers that I had won an award at my place of employment. (See Below)

Subject: Service Excellence Hero Award - Danny Pettry

On behalf of the Service Excellence Committee:

Congratulations to Danny Pettry for being chosen as last week’s Service Excellence HERO!

Danny was chosen because, “He goes above and beyond when working with the child residential unit. Every Friday in June, the patients on 2W were invited to participate in a day filled with fun activities that had nothing to do with therapy or school. It was like going to summer camp, for one day, each week. Danny spent a lot of time and energy planning the fun filled activities: from planning the all day activities, to requesting the money, to reserving a vehicle, to ordering T-shirts, to planning the food, and much, much more. Although Danny had much help from the other 2W staff, he is the one that organized and brought it all together.”

Way to go, Danny! J

Danny P. comments: These activities couldn't have taken place without the help of my fellow co-workers.

Here are some additional kind comments from Friends/ Co-workers that I received by email today:

So, What Were The Summer Camp Days?

I work at a residential unit for children who are abuse-reactive at a hospital.

We had a different “fun-filled day” each Friday in June to help the children enjoy life a little more while being in a hospital.

·         Blue Day: Wear new blue T-Shirts, Smurf related games, Smurf Berries, Smurf activity books, Smurf Comic books, blue-balloons! Kids let go of their balloons as they made a wish. The kids even got to watch the Smurf movie.

·         Peach Day: Trip to Local Park. Feed the ducks. Play on the playground. Eat peaches, of course. Have peach flavored candy and peach ice-cream. The kids got to watch the movie: James and the Giant Peach.

·         Polka Dot Circus Day: The kids had taken bingo markers and dabbed them on white T-shirts to create Polka Dots. They got to go to go out to a Wendy’s restraint to eat. They went to the movie theater and watched Madagascar 3. They visited a local bookstore. They had games and activities related to polka dots.

·         Green Day: The children received new green T-Shirts. They got to take a tour of the local Marshall University (Huntington, West Virginia). Their colors are green and white. They got to visit the student center and talk with college students. They got to eat at the famous Marshall Hall of Fame Café’ in downtown Huntington, W.Va. They got to watch the “We Are Marshall” movie.

·         Multi-Color Day: Each child received a different color T-shirt! The children were live pawns for a lifesize Candyland game! They rolled a large dice that had different colors. They moved to the game piece (same color construction paper) and read aloud the question/ or instruction on the back of the construction paper. Questions included: say something nice to the kid next to you. What is your favorite holiday? And other self-awareness, social skills, or self-esteem type of questions. Children received small pieces of candy or stickers for answering questions. There were several other fun games that involved balloons and life-size mazes. Children had pizza and got to watch the movie: Up.

We still have more to come. We’re going to do a Super Hero Day in July which all children get to dress up as a Super Hero. There will be games, movies, activities, comic books, and more!
