Healing Power of Music.

I follow the Research Digest Blog on brain and behaviour (It is British -- so it has the "u" in behavior).

They post interesting research studies. Some Rec. Therapists may enjoy the blog.

Today, they had an interesting article on music.

They argue that music with lyrics about violence promotes violence, but they decided to turn it around to see if positive pro-social music would promote pro-social behaviors.

And, they found that participants who listened to pro-social songs were less likely than participants who listened to neutral music to actually be aggressive.

I work with children who are aggressive (physical and verbal). I heard a young girl once sing what I'd define as innappropriate lyrics. I had had heard the song before, but I was really shocked that she knew the lyrics.

I may avoid playing music from the radio station in the future during groups like expressive arts. I may seek out more pro-social songs for this population. What do you think? Post your comments below.
