I believe that attending the American Therapeutic Recreation Association’s mid-year and annual conferences is the # 1 way to get CEUs. (or attending any of their branch association conferences). I attended the West Virginia Therapeutic Recreation Association (WVTRA – branch of ATRA) 2010 annual conference last week.
These are excellent opportunities. I always enjoy attending professional conferences especially ones held by ATRA. I plan on attending the 2011 conference in Indiana.
Recreational therapists from across the country and world attend these events. Topics are interesting and useful to practice. There are opportunities to network with RTs who work in your area: geriatrics, physical rehab mental health, community services, etc.
ATRA also offers opportunities to earn CEUs through their quarterly newsletter. This is for members only. If you’re not a member yet, then I highly recommend you to join.
Please note that I’m not an official representative of ATRA. I’m just a passionate member of the association and recommend all RTs to join. ATRA also provides webinars to help people get CEUs.
I believe that my web-site DannyPettry.Com is the second best way to earn CEUs.
I might be #2, but I try harder. Recreational Therapy is my passion. I have my M.S. degree in Recreational Therapy from Indiana University. I have an undergraduate degree in Park Resources and Leisure Services with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation from Marshall University (Huntington, W.Va.). I’ve held my Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credentials since 2003. I took the first exam available to me after graduation. I have worked in the field since 2002 and continue to do what I love – providing Recreational Therapy services for children at a behavioral health unit for a psychiatric hospital (located someone where in the two Virginias). I was awarded a “Recreational Therapy Advocate of the Year” in 2005 by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association and I had won the 2004 Dr. Peg Connolly Student Scholarship (while I was working on my graduate degree at IU. I have served on the board for my state association of ATRA as: student representative, ATRA representative, and was elected as the CTRS representative for the upcoming term.
I still buy text books when they’re released. Here are some examples: I purchased Dr. David Austin’s New 6th edition of Therapeutic Recreation Processes and Techniques last year. I purchased Lessons Learned: A Letter to Students and Practitioners in the field by Dr. David Austin this year.
In a nutshell, I want to make it simple: I’m very passionate about our profession. I love meeting others who do what we do. And I do my best to offer Continuing Education Opportunities for people in our field with my web-site.
