Yesterday, I had posted tips on professionalism after reading that the Obama administration had fired McChrystal for his inappropriate comments made during an interview with Rolling Stones magazine. I’ve not read the Stones article and can’t comment. I do want to focus on the importance of media and professionalism, especially in the arena of online social networks.
The Mint Twist is a blog on the UK perspective on Business, Property and Internet Strategy. Mint Twiter Blogger, Greg Jacobs had written in a June 24, 2010 post:
“The influence of Facebook has also spread to businesses and careers. It is widely reported that employers will try and find your profile on Facebook, just to see if there is anything you perhaps forgot to mention.”
Helpful hint: don’t post anything that could get you in trouble. You’ve no doubtly heard the expression: if it isn’t nice, don’t say it. I, Danny Pettry, am suggesting if it isn’t nice, don’t post it. Don’t post it on facebook, myspace, blogspot, twitter, or anywhere else. Be careful. It is almost like Orwell’s novel, “1984,” big brother is watching.
On the upside, these online social networks are probably going to be much bigger in the future. (At least this is my presumption.)
You could use these networks professionally to:
Find a job
Find the right person for a job
Find a person who is knowledge in an area
Network with other professionals.
I had a myspace page for recreational therapists. It was created in late 2006. It peaked at nearly 2,000 friends at one point. Many people are no longer using myspace. However, all 2,000 friends were recreational therapists, college students in the profession, or other allied professionals. It was a great tool.
Interested in taking a course on professionalism in Rec Therapy? It is worth 5 clock hours of Cont. Ed. There is a course on this topic listed at my web-site here: http://www.dannypettry.com/Courses.htm
